Hormone imbalance is a growing concern for many Americans. Why are so many women developing fibroids, breast cancer, cystic breasts, cystic ovaries, endometriosis, PMS and hot flashes? Why are we finding that most American men over 50 have an enlarged prostrate?

What are the best solutions? Pharmaceutical and surgical treatments have become common place. Are they your alternatives?

Body Restoration Technique or BRT was been developed by Dr. Eric E. Berg D.C. as an alternative. It uses natural alternatives to treat underlying causes of hormone imbalance.

Our endocrine system is 10 glands producing 50 or more hormones that control very specific body processes. The gland adds a hormone to the blood stream, it flows throughout the body. Hormones chemistry is designed like a key and the cells where it is to act have sites on the cell membrane or the nucleus that act as a lock that matches and takes direction from just that one hormone. When it reaches the specific cells it is to message, a hormone connects to the receptor transmitting the signal for a specific action or response. With this precision matching one would not expect a lot of problems.

So, what does cause hormones to get out of balance? A gland may have slowed production due to damage, health deterioration or age. The solution may be improved nutrition often with targeted nutritional supplementation.

A gland may be "overactive" producing more of a hormone than is needed. There may be many reasons for this. One example is the pancreas producing insulin. When we eat a meal with a high glycemic (sugar/ starch/ carbohydrate) index, the pancreas is triggered to release an insulin burst to match the high blood sugar. This works in conjunction with the liver to convert the sugars to adipose (fat) tissue storing the excess energy for future use. The system works pretty good. The problem is that the input (high glycemic foods) doesn't match the goal of stable body weight.

Especially in the last hundred years or so, substances that never existed before have been invented. Some of these have configurations and properties similar to hormones or in a wide variety of actual mechanisms, they affect the performance of hormones. These are called Endocrine Disruptors (ED's).

Why would this be? If you wanted to kill a bunch of bugs that were eating your crop with small quantities of very targeted chemicals, inventing chemicals that act on or as insect hormones would be a very good way to do it. These chemicals would quickly impact the energy management and reproductive functions making them very effective in small quantities. Insect biology is different from ours but sometimes the chemicals that work on insects also affect people. In addition, chemicals developed for many other uses can have side effects affecting the human endocrine system.

Endocrine Disruptors alter hormone function in four primary ways:
  • Mimic (fully or partially) by binding to the hormone receptors in place of the hormone.
  • Block by acting on the hormone to prevent or change how it binds to the receptors.
  • Alter increase or decrease the production or breakdown of natural hormones.
  • Modify the making and functioning of hormone receptors.

Endocrine receptors are located in the cell membrane and sometimes in the nucleus (thyroid is an example) of the cells that receive and respond to the hormone.

The most commonly studied hormones are sex hormones. The common term "Estrogen" actually covers several related/ similar hormones produced by the body. Not just the presence or absence of a hormone but the relative balance between them communicates to the receptors what action to take. Many man made substances act as Endocrine disruptors for these hormones.

How does one rid their body of endocrine disruptors?
